Cats Playing in Water
I had a cat who really played in her water! So I did some Googling.

Though the conventional wisdom might dictate otherwise, some cats love water –– as long as it’s not aimed at them, as it is during a bath, and consider water a fun toy. They love its reflective surface and the way it splashes when they hit it.
However, most consider water less of a plaything than a dish best served fresh. To some cats, that means moving water is preferable to the sort that sits still in a dish for hours. So it is that some cats prefer to drink aerated water directly from the tap, a fountain or even the toilet.
Cats who splish their water before drinking may, in fact, be attempting to achieve a similar effect. If you cat engages in this oddly cute behavior, consider getting her one of those recirculating water fountains now commercially available for cats. At the very least, you should change the water in her bowl twice a day. http://bit.ly/1FjpI8f

Why Does My Cat… Paw at Her Water Dish?
Pawing at, playing with or even splashing in a water dish is not as unusual for cats as you might think.

http://bit.ly/1Fe2NtQ Why Cats Play with water! I sent this article to my client, because this cat almost empties her bowl playing with it, I’m thinking a jug would be good for her. Although, take some of the fun out of it for the cat. I don’t generally recommend providing our pets with plastic drinking or food dishes, but in this case it could be a good idea.

http://consciouscat.net/2011/11/21/how-cats-drink/ this is a good article on how water is important for our cat’s health. We give our cats a scoop of wet food every morning, they usually think it’s a treat (well you know cats), but we began to help keep them hydrated. The video at the end is awesome.
