An Interview with with Leslie Ann Akin
Patt, we’re so pleased you joined Chicks Connect, please tell us more about yourself.I just joined Abundance Chicks in Vancouver, Washington in August this year. I’m from a small town and I didn’t understand networking. I went to a traditional networking group and it didn’t feel like it was a fit. I found Chicks Connect and I love women supporting women both personally and in business. I joined Chicks to find a sense of community. I’m finding support personally and professionally and surprisingly affirmations.
I used to be a National Park Ranger and worked in 14 different units across the country. My husband Chon, is Washington State Park Ranger. We live in Battle Ground, Washington and we will be staying.
I started Pampurred Pet Care in 1998, because I could not find a pet sitter. I realized other people would need this service as well, so I filled the need in this community. I still return to Forks, WA where I started this business to still serve clients there.
What’s the best thing about pet sitting? When a cat gives you a head bump or they purr for me. With cats you have to earn their trust. With dogs, you give them a treat and you’re good . . . mostly. (grin). I love the diversity of my clients (with fur and without fur) and the ever-changing schedule.
What is one misconception people have about you?Because I am overweight I feel like I might not have as much credibility as skinny people. That’s my self-talk, not usually my reality.
What kind of person do you like to work with?Honest, authentic people.
What are most proud of?When the Iraq and Afghanistan wars were active, I made a list of the local men and women who were on active duty there and posted their names and paid for newspaper ads to remind the community that those folks were over there serving for us. Mothers of the these soldiers said, “I knew I wasn’t alone.”
What motivates you and what doesn’t?I have a very deep sense of right and wrong. I won’t accept clients if I don’t like the way they treat their animals.
What do you consider to be your greatest strengths and weaknesses? My greatest strength is my greatest weakness – my ethics.
How do you work under pressure? My Park Ranger training helped me to be in the moment, then release later.
Who are your heroes and why?Any woman who reaches their hand out to help another. The women who were put in jail, beaten, force fed, to earn the right to vote. Also Chelsea Manning and Elizabeth Warren.
How do you think a friend and professor who knows you well would describe you?Open, nurturing and affirming.
If you had 24 hours left how would you spend it?My husband and my fur family, my sister who is in Maryland and a few other friends.
How can we connect with you?Patt Doyle
